Ready Steady Charlie was a performance-based experiment set in the Victoria and Albert Museum in London and inspired by the classic assembly line scene in Charlie Chaplin’s cinematic social satire Modern Times. For this event, Charlie Chaplin impersonator Lawrence Anthony was provided with a set of clear instructions directing him to assemble Victoria sponge cakes in the manner of an assembly line robot in front of a live audience. Once the cakes were robotically assembled and cut into pieces he was instructed to present the individual slices to the audience for eating.
